Retaining Walls for Sloping Gardens

A sloping garden in Ampthill can become level terraces, raised beds or a flat area for a patio once a retaining wall holds the soil back. We build garden walls in brick, block, natural stone and timber sleepers, with free draining backfill behind them so water does not build up.

Walls can be built in brick to match your house, rendered block for a clean line, natural stone or timber sleepers. Drainage behind the wall, using free draining backfill and weep points, stops wet soil building up pressure. These walls suit garden landscaping and modest level changes.

Retaining walls are built across Bedford, Milton Keynes, Woburn and Shefford. The free written quote sets out the material, height and drainage, and where specialist structural advice is needed, we say so clearly.

When to Call Us

When You Need a Retaining Wall

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • A Garden on a Slope

If your lawn runs uphill or downhill from the house, a retaining wall lets you create flat terraces that are easier to use and plant.

  • Soil Spilling Onto Paving

Borders that spill mud onto paving every time it rains are a sign the soil needs holding back. A low wall keeps the beds in place and the patio clean.

  • An Old Wall Leaning

Brick walls that bulge, crack or lean, and sleepers that have softened and split, are worth replacing before they give way and drop soil across the garden.

  • Room for a Level Patio

Cutting into a bank to make space for a patio or seating area usually needs a wall to support the ground left behind, and we can build both together.

How It Works

How a Retaining Wall Is Built

  1. Survey & Design

We look at the height of ground to be held, how water drains across the plot and how you want to use the space, then agree the line, height and material.

  2. Excavation & Footings

The ground is cut back to the agreed line and a solid footing is set for the wall to sit on, which keeps it stable as the soil behind settles.

  3. Building the Wall

The wall is built course by course in brick, block or stone, or sleepers are fixed in place, with drainage and free draining backfill placed behind as it rises.

  4. Backfill, Finish & Review

We finish the top, re-level the soil, clear away spoil and then review the completed work with you to confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Retaining Walls FAQs for Ampthill

Do you cover Ampthill?

Yes. Ampthill in Bedfordshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Flitwick, Wootton and Cranfield. Call 0800 158 5642 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

What is the best material for a garden retaining wall?

There is no single best choice. Brick and block are long lasting and can match the house. Natural stone looks at home in older or rural gardens. Timber sleepers are quicker to install and suit raised beds and low terraces, though timber will not last as long as masonry. We will explain the trade offs on site so you can weigh look, lifespan and cost.

Why does a retaining wall need drainage?

Wet soil is much heavier than dry soil, and water that cannot escape builds up pressure behind a wall. Over time that can push a wall out of line or crack it. Placing free draining material behind the wall and allowing water a way out helps relieve that pressure and keeps the wall standing straight for longer.

How high can you build a retaining wall?

We build garden retaining walls for landscaping, such as terraces, raised beds and level areas for a patio. For taller walls, or walls holding ground next to a building, a boundary or a public path, a structural engineer may need to design it and approvals may be needed. We will tell you at the survey if your wall falls into that category.

Can you replace an old sleeper wall that has rotted?

Yes. We remove the old sleepers and any soil that has slumped forward, check the ground behind, and rebuild in new sleepers or switch to brick, block or stone if you want something longer lasting. It is a good chance to add drainage behind the wall if the original had none, which is often why sleepers rot early.

Can you build a patio as part of the same project?

Yes, and it often makes sense to. Many retaining walls are built to create the flat space a patio needs, so we can plan the wall, the levels and the paving together. Doing it as one job means the patio is laid to the right falls against the new wall and the finish ties together neatly.
