Patio Paving

New Patios on a Proper Base

A new patio in Cranfield should sit on a firm base, run level across its length and fall gently away from the house so rain drains off. We lay natural stone, porcelain, concrete flags and block paving, and help you choose the paving and jointing that suit your garden.

We dig out, lay and compact the base, then set each slab on a full bed so it is supported across its whole underside. The patio falls gently away from your walls, set against the damp-proof course, so rainwater drains into the garden rather than towards your brickwork.

New patios are laid across Bedford, Flitwick, Sandy, Bletchley and the Milton Keynes area. The free quote is written down and covers the groundwork, bedding and paving you choose, based on the levels and access we find.

When to Call Us

Signs You Need a New Patio

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • Nowhere to Sit Outside

You have lawn or bare ground behind the house and want a solid, level space for outdoor dining, a barbecue or simply a couple of chairs in the sun.

  • An Old Patio Past Saving

Your existing slabs are cracked, loose or badly sunk, and the base underneath has given up, so lifting it and starting again is the sensible choice.

  • A New Extension or Doors

Bi-fold or French doors have gone in, and you want paving outside that lines up with the new threshold and gives you a step-free route out.

  • A Change of Style

The paving is sound but dated, and you would like a cleaner modern porcelain or a natural stone finish that better suits your home.

How It Works

How a New Patio Is Laid

  1. Planning the Layout

We measure the space, agree the size and shape with you, check the levels at the house and help you choose the paving and jointing.

  2. Digging Out

Turf, soil or old paving is removed to the required depth, and the ground is checked for soft spots, roots or services before the base goes in.

  3. Base & Laying

A sub-base is laid and compacted, then each slab or block is bedded and tapped down to line and level, with a steady fall away from the walls.

  4. Pointing & Review

Joints are pointed or filled, the area is swept and cleared, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

New Patio FAQs for Cranfield

Do you cover Cranfield?

Yes. Cranfield in Bedfordshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Wootton, Tongwell and Kempston. Call 0800 158 5642 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

Is porcelain or natural stone better for a patio?

Porcelain is very dense, so it resists stains and moss and keeps its colour with little upkeep, though it needs careful cutting and a suitable primer to bond well. Sandstone and limestone have natural variation and a softer look, but they are more porous and benefit from regular cleaning. Both last well when laid on a proper base.

How do you stop water running towards the house?

We set a gentle fall across the patio so surface water runs away from your walls, usually towards the lawn, a border or a drain. The finished level is also kept below your damp-proof course. Getting these levels right at the start is one of the main things that separates a patio that drains well from one that puddles.

How long does a new patio take to lay?

It depends mainly on the size, the paving you choose and how much digging out is needed. A small, simple patio can typically be completed in a few days, while larger areas or jobs with steps and walls take longer. We will give you a realistic idea of timing when we quote.

Can you lay a new patio over my old one?

Laying over old slabs is rarely a good idea. It raises the level, often too close to the damp-proof course, and any movement in the old base carries through to the new paving. In most cases we lift the existing patio, check the ground and lay a fresh, compacted base.

Can I use block paving for a patio?

Yes. Block paving makes a hard-wearing patio and works well where you want it to match a block-paved driveway or path. It is laid on a compacted base with a sand bed and kiln-dried sand in the joints, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if a repair is ever needed.
