Garden Paths & Steps, Laid Level

A path to the shed, a side passage to the bins or steps down to the lawn should be firm, even and comfortable to use. We build paths and steps for homes in Woburn in paving, stone, block or resin, matched to your patio or driveway where you want them to tie together.

Each path is built on a compacted base so it stays level, in paving slabs, natural stone, block paving or resin to match your patio or drive. Steps are set to a comfortable, consistent height, and side passages are given falls so water drains away from the house.

Paths and steps are built from our Bedford base out to Ampthill, Cranfield, Letchworth and Milton Keynes. You get a free written quote setting out the materials and levels, priced from the slope and ground we find.

When to Call Us

When Paths & Steps Need Replacing

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • Loose or Rocking Slabs

Slabs that tip underfoot, lift at the corners or have sunk are a trip hazard, especially on a front path that visitors use every day.

  • A Worn Track on the Lawn

If everyone cuts the same corner to the shed or gate, a proper path stops the grass turning to mud and keeps dirt out of the house.

  • Steep or Uneven Steps

Steps with mismatched heights, crumbling edges or no clear tread feel unsafe. Rebuilding them to even dimensions makes the garden easier to get around.

  • A Damp Side Passage

Narrow passages that hold puddles, gather moss or have broken concrete make the bins a chore. A new surface laid to a fall gives a firm footing.

How It Works

How Garden Paths & Steps Are Built

  1. Planning the Route

We mark out where the path and any steps will run, check levels and drainage, and agree the width, material and edging with you before any digging begins.

  2. Excavation & Groundwork

We dig out to the depth the surface needs, remove old paving and spoil, and lay a compacted sub-base so the path stays firm and even under regular foot traffic.

  3. Laying the Path & Steps

Slabs, stone, blocks or resin are laid to the agreed falls, and steps are built course by course with consistent riser heights and solid, well bedded treads.

  4. Finishing & Handover

We point or sand the joints, fit the edging, clear the site and then review the completed work with you to confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Paths & Steps FAQs for Woburn

Do you cover Woburn?

Yes. Woburn in Bedfordshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Bletchley, Flitwick and Cranfield. Call 0800 158 5642 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

What is the best surface for a garden path?

It depends on how the path is used and the look you want. Paving slabs and natural stone suit most gardens and can match a patio. Block paving is hard wearing and easy to repair in sections. Resin gives a smooth, joint free finish that drains through. We will talk you through the pros and cons of each when we visit, based on your garden rather than a sales script.

How wide should a path be?

As a rough guide, a garden path used by one person at a time is usually comfortable at around 900mm wide, while a front path or a route used with bins, bikes or a wheelbarrow often works better a little wider. Side passages are limited by the space available. We measure on site and suggest a width that suits how you will actually use it.

Can you build steps into a sloping garden?

Yes. We build steps in the same paving, stone or block as the path so the two look like they belong together. On a longer slope we can add level landings between short flights, which makes the climb easier. If the slope also needs soil holding back on either side, we can look at low retaining walls as part of the same job.

Will a new path stop water pooling by the house?

A new path is laid to a gentle fall so surface water runs away from the house rather than towards it, which usually solves pooling caused by old, sunken paving. We also keep the finished level below the damp proof course. If the ground itself drains very poorly, we will tell you during the visit and explain what else might help.

Can a resin path go over existing concrete?

Sometimes. If the existing concrete is sound, reasonably level and free of major cracks, resin bound can often be laid over it, which saves digging it out. If it is broken, lifting or badly sloped, it is usually better to remove it and lay a new base. We check the condition on site and give you an honest recommendation either way.
